Hair Dye & WriMo-Wisdom

On November 1st, I wrote about 750 words.

On November 2nd, I rewrote those 750 words: 790 words total on Friday. 990 words total right this moment.

What happened? I was trying to write a hot paranormal romance while all I really had in mind was a YA fantasy novel. And I hate writing stuff that doesn't feel right to my. I have to love what I do or else it will end in the trash.

So, did I just waste 750 words? I could have had a total of 1,740 words!

No, not a waste at all, because I already learned my first WriMo-lessons:

  • Sometimes characters are more believable if one bisects their age.
  • If it sounds better in present tense, write in present tense.
  • Although a fight scene goes fast, fast, fast, you don't have to write fast. If the fight is only 30 seconds long you still don't have to write it within 30 seconds as well (not even when you're really excited about putting it all to paper).
  • Don't hurry too much. If you put yourself under too much pressure chances are you'll end up hating all you've written before.
I also learned that dark brown hair dye doesn't work for me. I'm still blond. :(

Have you gained any wisdom during the first days of NaNoWriMo? Please share.

Writing Daily

I've been told that a writer should write every day. I've also read the same advice numerous times. Is it good advice? Does it put you under too much pressure?

Wrtiting daily makes perfect sense to me. You're getting some writing done, you practice your craft, you get a better feel for it. And I have tried to write daily. Did it work? No.

The first time I tried to write every day was back in the early 90s. I already wrote stories at that time, but the one thing I really took very, very serious was writing in my dairy every single day.

The result? Lots of crappy one-sentence notes. I can't be forced to write if I want to give depth and meaning to my writing. It just doesn't work.

Still, I think that you should write as often as possible. I do. You don't have to submit to only one writing project at a time or you will get more and more frustrated. Keep it interesting. Blog every Monday, work on your novel every Tuesday. Revising and editing counts as writing, too! If there's no time to write or you really don't want to write (it happens), don't write. Instead, grab a good book and read. Do research. Take long walks outside or go to the gym.

After all, it's your decision. If you feel you should write daily, do it! Just keep in mind that not writing really is NOT writing. Write as often as you can but don't kill your muse by putting yourself under too much pressure.
